The membrane-associated periodic skeleton (MPS) of neurons is a supramolecular protein structure that we study using fluorescence nanoscopy. Together with our friends, the neurobiologist Dr. Alfredo Cáceres and Dr. Nicolás Unsain, we explain what we know so far about this neuronal nano-structure, what proteins are involved, how are they organized at the molecular level, and we speculate what possible functions could be fulfilled by the MPS.
